This site is out of date. I am working on a brand new site which also takes into account the 2026 closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Overview of the Climate Change Issue
As an Australian, I have produced this site for other Australians. It is written from an Australian
perspective.
The overwhelming majority of scientists are convinced that the climate is getting warmer and this warming
of the climate is caused by people. Therefore it essential that we act. Unfortunately, with Australia's current
federal government we have a policy paralysis. This has the following consequences:
- Carbon emissions are falling very slowly.
- Electricity prices are rising.
- The federal budget is adversely impacted.
On this site I explain how this trifecta of bad outcomes has come about, I give some background
knowledge and I outline solutions.
Overview of long term goal
In order to stop climate change getting worse we have to stop burning fossil fuels and stop deforestation.
Even without any major technological breakthrough and using only technologies which are already in commercial
use, we can get by without fossil fuels as follows:
- Generate electricity mostly from sun and wind, supplemented by some hydro-electricity.
- Store electricity using hydro-electric storage and perhaps batteries.
- Switch most transportation from hydrocarbon-based fuel to electricity and/or hydrogen.
- Use only renewable fuels. This could be biofuels (from waste but without dedicating agricultural
land to biofuels production) or hydrogen obtained through electrolysis.
- Reform building codes and town-planning so that new residential buildings are designed to be comfortable with
minimal or no heating or air-conditioning.
Overview of what would be good policy right now
- Legislate that no more new fossil fuel power stations will be built.
- Legislate for percentages of electric/hydrogen cars and other vehicles. The percentages would
be higher for more expensive cars.
- Better demand management supported by smart metering in every household and business.
